Why horizontal bars work well for rankings

Long category labels can overlap, tilt, or be cut off on a vertical chart. Horizontal bars place labels on the vertical axis and use bar length on the horizontal axis to represent values, leaving more room for readable names.

When to use horizontal bars

• Long labels: departments, regions, product names, and survey questions. For survey response proportions, consider a 100% stacked chart.
• Rankings: sort bars from largest to smallest to make leaders and gaps easy to compare. Keep a meaningful ordinal order when the categories have one.
• Many categories: a taller horizontal layout can accommodate around 10–25 bars without squeezing their labels into the screen width. Check readability before exporting.

When columns are a better choice
